Happy Solstice! Celebrate with Park Photos…

Reflection of Hallett's Peak in Lily Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.

Summer is never long enough. It’s a rule. After being in school for the past nine months, I’m squeezing every second out of Colorado’s long summer days, ‘cuz I know they won’t last. But climbing at The Park or Mt. Evans definitely demands a certain fitness—and not the kind you get from grad school in Boston. The whole sea-level thing is good for sushi and not much else.

Adapting to Park season is tricky. First there’s the hike. And just like you gotta be in shape to drink sans hangover, most people gotta dial the hike before sending their projects. So, after a week of heading up every day, my sea-lungs have adapted and it’s time to pick a project…

Here’s a sampling of some Park photos from the past week. Enjoy!

Cinematic Adventures

When I stay up too late at night drinking Mike’s Hard Lemonade and Kentucky Deluxe straight from the bottle I start to go a little crazy. Sometimes I run with it and try to bring the hot shit to you all. Consider this my grand return to posting regularly or something. Or just consider this a mistake I made while under the influence of intoxihol. Either way here’s the idea.

I always thought for some reason that Chris Lindner’s parallel in Hollywood was Matthew McKindagay. I don’t know why, but for some reason I always thought this. Perhaps it’s because they are both people you’ll hate on publicly but deep down you know he’s probably a really fuckin’ cool guy and you want to know how he’s managed to run around making out with Kate Hudson in like every movie he ever made. I dunno. Much respect Chris but I had to put you on the cover of How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days. I can’t help it. The connection is too powerful. Anyway. I made a few more of these. I think you should check them out. If you have any good ideas post em up or link to your own Do something. Enjoy. Oh and don’t make fun of my photoshop skills. I know full well I do not have any. Just leave it out. › Keep reading

Ascent Acronyms

Cyanide & Happiness @ a href=

Cyanide & Happiness @Explosm.net

Climbing has tons of acronyms, numbers, letters, and symbols and categories that allow us to argue endlessly about banally useless distinctions. We’ve figured out how so split hairs finer than Bill Clinton, especially when labeling the ascent of a route. It can be really confusing. But personally, I love it and I think we need more. Thus, in the spirit of endless obfuscation, I’m proposing more acronyms that will give us even more useless distinctions to argue about. Some of these you have surely seen before. I’ve also added some new ones that hopefully will make it into popular use. If the new nomenclature is adopted, the climbing literature of the future will be as obtuse as a medical journal. › Keep reading

Nalle Hukkataival Hikes Jade

Yesterday, Finland’s Nalle Hukkataival finessed Jade, just before dark snow clouds pummeled upper Chaos Canyon with slush. Known to some as the hardest problem in the U.S., Jade was first imagined by Dave Graham in the mid 2000’s, established by Daniel Woods in 2007, repeated by Tyler Landman, Paul Robinson and now Nalle. Jade’s no roadside boulder. At the moment, the hike to upper is a snowy, postholing, sneaker-skiing adventure that leaves most people damn exhausted. Nalle’s efforts were impressive to say the least. Luckily we had two cameras rolling. Video to come!

Whiskey Wednesday: Micah Dash-Jonny Copp-Wade Johnson

I haven’t had to deal with death much in my life. I’ve had grandparents die. I’ve had a few acquaintances die. I’ve even had some members of the Oklahoma climbing community die. No one I really knew very well. That isn’t to discount their passing, but more to say I haven’t been as affected.
