Shit We Like: Stone Age Climbing Gym

posted by wig

It is totally unfortunate that I came to know Stone Age under the circumstances that I was in.  When a group of friends and I got stranded in Albuquerque, New Mexico because of a broken down van , Stone Age Climbing Gym was the beacon  of shining climbing glory that got us psyched despite the grim situation we were in.

Stone Age is nestled in the northern, weird industrial part of Albuquerque. The gym boasts some pretty kick ass features which you can see in the picture below. They have a seriously good lead wall with tons of variety from straight vertical to the massive arch that stretches across the entrance of the main room. They also have a great boulder that is topoutable and two other seperate bouldering rooms.

The MOST rad thing about this gym though is it’s training area. They have a seriously mean campus wall with pinches, slopers and the rest, and they ALSO have one of the most massive system boards I’ve ever laid eyes on. Granted I haven’t seen a TON of great system boards but this one seemed special to me. I’m convinced training at this gym would get you really effin strong.

When you get done climbing you still have to get yourself some food and beer, which Albuquerque has plenty of. Duke city seems to be the green chili capital of the world and there is not shortage of places to find good New Mexican food. I WOULD recommend, though, checking out the following for solidly delicious food and drink: Marble Brewery, Frontier Restaurant, The Copper Lounge, Dion’s Pizza. If finding food is just too difficult for you just ask some locals and I’m sure they can direct you in the right direction.

Visit, say hi to Lance at the gym, remind him he’s basically the shit.

  2. Brian and Lance have done a great job with the gym. Some of the 5.11a’s are actually 5.13a, so don’t be discouraged by Hadfield’s chronic (but lovable) sandbagging!
